Capture or Destroy in Deck Conn

Prizes, wrecks, and the call that writes your corvette’s reputation.

Capture or Destroy

Every hostile in Deck Conn is a fork: capture or destroy. The store page puts that choice in the feature list because it is not flavor text. Rewards, reputation, and the later campaign all care which fork you took. This guide is how to make the call on purpose.

If you cannot yet disable a subsystem on purpose, go back to Combat. Capture is a precision job. Destroy is what you do when precision is gone.

Why the game bothers with prizes

Funtime Electrics framed the fantasy as naval command in space. A navy that only vaporizes hulls learns nothing and salvages nothing. Capture is how you turn a contact into upgrades, intelligence, and a story the crew can repeat. Destroy is how you end a threat that still has teeth, or a hulk you cannot afford to babysit.

Launch copy says captured or destroyed ships shape your legacy. That means the campaign will remember patterns. A captain who never takes prizes is a blunt instrument. A captain who always tries to board a fully armed cruiser is a memorial plaque.

How to set up a capture

You do not capture a healthy ship that can still see, move, and shoot. You capture a ship you have already beaten in the information war.

Working sequence:

  1. Buy a sensor picture good enough to name their weapons and propulsion. Quiet if you can; loud if they already know you.
  2. Spend power on the weapons that can disable, not the weapons that delete.
  3. Target propulsion first if they can still choose the range. A prize that runs is not a prize.
  4. Target weapons next so the boarding or seizure phase is not a suicide watch.
  5. Leave reactor and hull intact enough that the ship still exists as an asset.
  6. Only then take the capture action the interface offers. Do not invent a boarding minigame the store never described; use the command the game actually gives you.

If at any point their remaining firepower can kill your reactor, you have left capture territory. Switch to destroy, or disengage using the tactics that keep you alive.

When destroy is the professional choice

Destroy when:

  • The HQ order was elimination, not investigation.
  • Your own hull, fuel, or crew cannot escort a prize home. The campaign is full of patrols that still have to return.
  • The enemy reactor is already a problem and a capture would be a radiation story, not a salvage story.
  • You are fighting more than one contact and a disabled ship will re-arm while you duel the second.
  • You simply do not have the power left to be gentle. Gentle is expensive.

Destroy is not a failure. A clean wreck that lets you complete the order is better than a heroic prize that strands the corvette.

Reputation without a hidden spreadsheet

This wiki will not invent a numeric reputation table the developers have not published. Play as if HQ, the crew, and future contacts notice whether you take prisoners or leave debris. If a later order reads like a political job, a history of reckless destroys may close doors. If a later order reads like a hunter job, a history of failed captures may waste time.

Log each decision next to the crew notes. Promotions should follow people who set up captures or who correctly called a destroy, not people who fired the most shots.

Common mistakes

  • Shooting the reactor “to be safe,” then wondering why there is nothing left to capture.
  • Starting a capture with empty batteries because the alpha strike looked cinematic.
  • Ignoring controls and mis-clicking the plot during the one turn the prize is actually helpless.
  • Treating every distress call as a guaranteed capture. Distressed is not the same as disarmed.
  • Reading a review that calls the game “FTL-like” and assuming every fight must end in scrap.

After the call

If you captured, spend the next quiet stretch on damage control and a new power plan that includes whatever you just towed. If you destroyed, dump heat, reload the picture, and decide whether the patrol is still solvent. Then return to the Guides Hub or the Updates Hub if a patch changed boarding, salvage, or order language.

The conn is a legal metaphor for a reason. Someone has to say the words. Say them with a plan.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers captains actually search for after launch.

Is capture always better than destroy in Deck Conn?

No. Capture needs a disabled, escortable hull. Destroy is correct when you cannot pay for gentleness.

Which systems should I knock out for a capture?

Propulsion and weapons first, sensors if they can still call friends. Leave enough ship to be a prize — details in Combat.

Does capture affect the campaign?

Official copy says capture or destroy shapes your ship’s legacy and rewards. Treat it as a campaign decision, not a one-fight trick.

Can another player help me board?

No. The game is single-player. The capture call is yours alone.
